Not disagreeing with you, at night its better to have Radar and Marpa than not to have it, in my opinion. During the day I wouldnt even bother switching it on.
I can't say I make any distinction between day & night, given good visibility. If anything, I find coping with ship traffic easier at night as the lights make their aspect plain, though some people I've sailed with have difficulty. My old B&W set doesn't take MARPA sadly and other expenses this year have put back our planned updating.

yep... i'll agree with that.... anything of a sea, and it struggles to hold a reliable 'fix' on another vessel..... also heavy rain storms cause targets to be lost....
I agree with the gist of this thread... if you can afford it, then buy it... it all helps.... but don't rely 100% on it....

mini marpa is only any good in calm conditionds unless one has a Gyro to give very quick heading info. even then doubtful in breezy conditions

I was aware of that and that would have been part of the update. Although there are exceptions, fog is commoner in fairly calm weather.

I still do. Well, I hire a liferaft, if I'm honest. And BR is only 25 ft.

The good ship Beyond Reason has no radar. No AIS. No SeeMe or 'proper' radar reflector, just the bird feeder type.
I do have a foghorn. And a gps, and an echo sounder and a handheld chartplotter.
I'm not saying I wouldn't like to have these toys, but if I waited till I could afford all the things I'd like to have on my boat I'd never go sailing.

I am in the same position except I have a large Firdell on the mast. I have not ever had anything in addition to GPS/Echo/VHF, although a new DSC set is there.
I have not hesitation in crossing anywhere to anywhere but will alway choose my weather. Most of the discussed items are on the to buy list, but a long way below SS water tanks, rejigging the saloon berths, setting up lee cloths, a sun awning etc.
