Anyone know if there is a chandlery around the top of the Orwell that stocks electrical bits? (cable, fixings, battery terminals etc).... save me having a wasted trip at the weekend....
There is a helpful chandler at Suffolk Yacht harbour, and a smaller dinghy-oriented one in one of the villages between Levington and Felixstowe - probably not quite what you want. I haven't tried Ipswich, but there are forumites there who will tell you.
I am not sure if they have electricky bits but there is a seemingly well stocked swindlery at Fox's Marina. I am not local there but have looked in a couple of times and they do seem to have a pretty extensive stock.
I'm guessing that my other options besides Foxs are the Chandlers at Haven and at Shotley.... I just wondered if anyone new if any of these (or others) stock electrical bits.... I'm not local, and its a long way to come to find that I cant get my job done through non availability of bits!
I would definitely recommend Fox's - they do see to stock most things. We are based at Woolverstone, who also has a smaller chandlery that might be able to help. Why not give Fox's a call before you head out - 01473 688431
Did the rounds for bits whilst rewiring a few years ago.
Helps if you have a car!
here are your options:
1. Fox's Chandlery at Ipswich. The largest in the area, staff are in my experience experienced and helpful. They have a sizeable electronics section. Start here. They sell a very good and cheap waterproof junction box, and quite a lot of other stuff.
2. Woolverstone Marina, a little further along towards Shotley, but before Pin Mill, have a small chandlery, but if you electrical requirements are engine related Volspec also have a service station there.
3. Suffolk Yacht Harbour (the marina at Levington) have a chandlery which carries some electrical stuff. French Marine Motors have a service depot in the same marina.
4. The "dinghy-related" chandlery is Seamark Nunn in Felixstowe; very good for dinghy jewellery and outboad stuff.
5. If you want an elegant bronze or brass light fitting for a classic, try Classic Marine in Woodbridge.
Noted your bio. Two local dates to think about, if you have Ransome-type children, as we do, are the Nancy Blackett Trust AGM at Pin Mill SC on the 4th June and the East Coast Old Gaffer's Association Swallows and Amazons weekend at Walton on July 23-34th (3/4 tonners welcome, honest!)
Thats sounds good.... My nine year old daughter is obsessed with Swallows and Amazons... I am forever finding a copy of one AR book or another hidden under her pillow! (maybe I should get her to read 'We didn't mean to go to sea' before July - I thinks thats set near Walton isn't it?)
I think she secretly sees herself as a bit a Susan!
The old gaffers weekend at Walton sounds particularly fun.....
The "Nancy Blackett" which is owned by the aforesaid trust and which lives at Woolverstone Marina in the summer, when not away, is the original of the "Goblin", the boat in "We didn't Mean to Go to Sea" (set in Pin Mill and the North Sea) and in "Secret Water" (set in Walton Backwaters).
pumpkin at Martlesham don't have much in the way of electrical bits, they are extremely helpful and if you rang in advance I'm sure they could get stuff in. Apart from that Foxs is best bet they have a full Ancor rack full of real marine electrical fuse holders, crimp connectors, wire / cable etc.
