Simple one this, meths (with the dye) stinks even after adding 10% water. Our supply of denatured alcohol from Belgium has almost run out and I need to find a supplier in the UK. Does know a company that will supply it in relatively small (20L) quantities? I think it's used in the furniture restoration business?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Simon

I assume you are looking for what used to be called Industrial Methylated Spirit (IMS) and is now called Industrial Denatured Alcohol (IDA).

To obtain it legally in this country you have to be authorised by HM Revenue and Customs. They will only authorise its purchase for approved uses. Fuel for cooking stoves is not one of the approved uses!

We have been round and round this one on here numerous times.

You cannot legally obtain IDA for use as a cooking fuel in the UK.
You are stuck with the blue dyed stuff (Completely Denatured Alcohol, or CDA) unless you can can convince the R&C that you have a legitimate use for IDA. Then Lord help you if they decide to inspect your huge fleet of model steam engines, furniture restoration works or whatever.

I have found the best place to go is to the country farmer outlets such as Mole Valley farmers who have stores throughout South West. Its much much cheaper than elsewhere if you buy in bulk. They sell it in 5 litre drums - perhaps you have a similar type store near you. Wont ever go near a swindlery or a B&Q again!

I think isopropanol, 2-propanol, isopropyl alcohol, or whatever you prefer to call it would be an acceptable substitute for denatured ethanol. It does however have a stronger and less pleasant odour than IDA so there might still be objections for that reason.
It might also have a greater tendency to deposit soot.
Compared with pure ethanol it is slightly less volatile, has a slightly lower flash point (but both are classed as highly flammable), has a lower lower explosive limit but a higher autoignition temperature.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has tried it.

After the last round of discussions I did just that, small sample from Ebay seller. Tried it in the workshop before risking the boat! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Right on both counts Vic.

Smell is similar to nail varnish remover/Acetone, and it does produce more soot.

I'd be happier using Meths, unless the continental stuff was available.

I know, I thought a 'friend' was doing that for me. See earlier post /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Roger - I know where you live OK! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
