In the summer I installed an Origo 3000 cooker and used it two or three times with meths. It deposited black soot all over my coach roof which will will wipe off luckily. Is there a soot free fuel I can use? I know that it's possible to add 5-15% water which is supposed to help the meths to burn more efficiently (I didn't do this). Is there a better fuel or is the water my only option? Does the water really stop the soot?

We use a similar cooker in our boat. I've had no problems with soot, except on the bottoms of the pans. Sometimes remember to put some water in the mix sometimes not. The water does not seem to make any difference to the burning of the meths and the jury is out on the soot issue.

UK meths is loaded with other chemicals to make it undrinkable. I do believe that you can get a pure version of 'meths' in France. That may burn cleaner and solve your problem.

The other area I'd look at is to ensure that the flame is getting enough air. Soot normally forms when the flame does not burn cleanly.

Overall I think that the meths cooker is very good - cooks well and is simple with few moving parts. Also each fill seems to last a long while, even when feeding 6!
Hope this helps.

Alcool a bruler from France is what you need. We have an Origo, and there is absolutely no sotting, other than the pan bottoms as already mentioned...

Try adding the little water to the meths -- that's what trangia says to do when their spirit cookers create soot. I have tried it on one of their stoves and it seems to work..

Not sure how it works -- probably to do with slowing down the combustion rate.
