Dont know east coast well. Will look out for it in St Kat Dock next week. But where's your final destination - not Shetlands I presume? Just curious.

I'm heading that way in a couple of weeks. Nice marina at Burnham on Crouch with good facilities and an excellent chandlery. You could also try Suffolk Yacht Harbour on the Orwell but try and get a berth near the entrance. The water doesn't seem to circulate sufficiently to clear the far end of muck which stinks a bit on hot days. My personal favourite is Woodbridge Tide Mill. The facilities are not great but the staff are very friendly and Woodbridge is a nice town with plenty of places to eat and drink. I lived there for a number of years as a nipper so it's great for me to go back and re-visit old haunts.

Not sure yet...were on mission to find next years cruising ground...we are based in Herts..Broxbourne to be precise and we are looking for a new place to moor on a long term basis. I want to be able to pop round to the Thames every now and then, we want to do some river cruising when conditions at sea are too much for kids and we want it all about and hour and half away max! oh yes ...and some breathtaking scenery (I know this is not available on the east coast but we can dream ) not much to ask eh!

We did have a little searay 220 pre kids and we moored it in Burnham Yatch Harbour..but peeps were pretty unfriendly and river looked like your dangly bits would drop off if you ever went in it..still will probably give it another look as its bin about 10 years..

Southwold is good Max is the harbour master (young lady), can get in at most states of tide but call up before entrance and stick to instructions.

Lowestoft is Ok exspensive moorings for this area, you can go thro to the broads via the lock its quite painless now they operate with more staff.

Have you had a look at Ipswich lately? They've redone the old docks right in the centre of the city and turned it into a very attractive marina complex. Peters have a fitting out centre there for their Fairline distributorship and it's all done "in the best possible taste". Lots to do in the evening and about 3/4 hr down the Orwell to the sea at Felixstowe. Driving time from Broxbourne I guess would be about the hour and bit mark. Worth a look I would have thought.

We're in St.Neots Cambs and were going to base our new boat there and had a couple of discussions with the HM there re berthing and they were very helpful. In the end we decided to keep the old boat for this year, but it's certainly high on our list of possible new bases when we do eventually change boats.

If you haven't already seen 'East Coast Rivers' by Jack Coote @£20 it's well worth a look, geared towards sailors but a nice read ! Recommend the Orwell . I spend a lot of time around the area . I live just down the road from you and it takes me @ an hour and a quarter to drive M25/A12 about half an hour longer if you go the scenic route .

As mentioned in a previous post Ipswich has lots of facilities for the family, also nice and quick by train from Liverpool St should you not want the burden of having to leave the car.

Can also recommend the River Blackwater. If Marina's are your thing Bradwell is OK. Easy access HW +-4hrs or so. West Mersea is a beautiful place but swinging moorings only. Tollesbury Marina is supposed to be a good place for families but access only HW+-2 iirc. Maldon is a lovely little town (I'd say that cos I live here!) but dries. You could lock into Heybridge basin a few miles downstream if you were feeling adventurous.

Of course if you are really feeling adventurous the place to go is the River Ore, Orford and Aldeburgh. Pick up a copy of the local chartlet at one of the East Coast Chandlerys and go in a couple of hours after LW.

As mentioned Ipswich now has a cracking marina (couple of them actually.) Worth a visit. Can heartily recommend the Lord Nelson pub a couple of streets back from the docks. Doesn't look anything from the outside but really nice inside, good beer and excellent food.

Have fun,

Yes, the R Deben is very nice, but beware the entrance this year, its very shallow, well under 1m at LWS... Go in on the flood at ½ tide +, or call John White - the ferry man on Ch 8 - Odd Times - for advice or as a pilot. His Tel No is 01394 270106 or Mob 07803476621

If you want some peace and quiet you could get all the way to Norwich via the river Yare. I would advise entry at Yarmouth rather than fiddle your way through at Lowestoft/Oulton broad. I guess you could try Brooms boatyard at Brundall if you wanted a mooring for a period that allowed you to nip home for a time. Thinking about it, the railway that runs from Norwich to Yarmouth (The Wherry line) is very convenient for anyone wanting the train to London. Brundall has an excellent station and trains run quite often.

Good luck

Also worth looking at Titchmarsh Marina (Walton Backwaters), good restaurant on site together with new chandlery that has recently opened. Tend to find Ipswich to the open sea a bit of a drag. Titchmarsh is only 15 mins to the sea.
