Hi

Something tells me that re-caulking should be the last job before the boat is put in the water. However, psychologically, I would feel a lot better to see all my gaping seams filled! I still have to refit a keel, sort out some damaged planks at the stern, fit 3 new floors and replace some of the decking.

This could still take several months, would it be crazy to recaulk now? is there a risk that lead paste putty mix would dry out?

Thanks

Hi Norman,

It sounds like you have a lot to do! Over a period of several months you could see some movement in the planking, depending on exposure to weather conditions etc. It would be best to leave the caulking, priming and antifouling until a few weeks before you have a firm date for her to go back in. I had a problem a few years ago when Joliette was left baking in the June sunshine on a concrete hardstanding for an extra four weeks before the yard could put her back in. In spite of my best endeavours to keep her hydrated (which included draping old balnkets all around her and spraying with water a few times a day) I still had some seams opening up.

So, my advice would be to leave it until you have a firm date, unless she's kept in a nice cool boat shed.

I am led to believe that putting the caulking in dry is no problem it will let you complete the painting etc on the inside of the hull and not contaminate the seems this is what I am doing on my 1905 gaff cuter but I am leaving the paying up of the seems till the final finishing of the out side when if any harding up is necessary it can be done then. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
