Orange flashing light on mast?

Hi all, ive not long owned my recent boat which was pre owned. I inherited it with what appears to be an orange light with a quite large, all round lens, half way up the mast. It looks like the sort of thing one would see on top of a motorway repair vehicle. The boat is well equiped and has a man overboard facility as part of the raymarine nav gear. It also has a raymarine intruder alarm. Could the light (which ive not seen working but i assume flashes), be related to one of these or is the boat intended for canal and waterway repair work? Any ideas?

It might possibly be a 'Bilge Warning Light'. These are certainly fitted to RNLI Lifeboats on moorings and may very well be fitted to other vessels.

The light is activated when a bilge pump is activated - giving a clear visual indication on shore, as it's not always possible to hear bilge pumps operating.

Are there any road works in the area ?

GOOD thinking. Will check that one out.

Have you tested the top speed of the boat? And does it have hydrofoils, or a hovercraft cushion?

Ive had her up to 2.5 knots. YES SHE DOES HAVE CUSHIONS! Should the light flash when my wife is below decks making things look homely?

It should be connected to your "funbox". whenever you open the dorr of said funbox on a quiet mooring for a llight snifter, it will alert all forumites within range so that they can come to help you clean out the contents before they go off.

AHH I see ( i think) Is a 'light snifter' a type of downwind sail? I presume a funbox is something i should have learnt about at school. And 'Forumites', is a type of old' fossil ?

Thanks for advice. Andy.

Shouldn't there be two, to indicate your intention to turn port or starboard? :)

but wouldn't that be a flashing green for starboard and flashing red for port, and don't forget the flashing white, when you decide to reverse.???????

seriously though, there are several types of vessel listed which have to use amber flashing lights, ranging from range safety vessels to subs. what type of vessel did you purchase....

Mandatory for Cowes harbour, if you are a ferry entering/leaving.

Just how big is this "recent boat"?

Does it have 'Red Funnel' on it anywhere?

You beat me to it! I too noticed that Astute was sporting an amber flashing light. andrewfollett, I would check the engine, echo sounder & condition of your tow rope!

Did I read somewhere else on these forums, that the Army are sending leaflets to the Navy, showing a photo of grounded sub entitled "should have gone to specsavers" on them.

Its definately a sail boat. Has a mast, some sails, winches. Moody 49 i think.

I would be amazed if they were not doing something along those lines.
