Delighted to see my daughter taking to the oppies - was thinking of a good bright book for her to absorb over the winter - not too serious and technical but bright and fun if possible. Any recommendations?

A woman who lived at Newtown, IOW, once kindly gave us a lift in her car. She told us she wrote children's books with plots involving dinghy sailing and we bought one from her as a gift for a granddaughter. Unfortunately I can't remember her name (the authoress, not the granddaughter) but she ought not to be difficult to track down.

Our son, now a dinghy instructor, used to sit in bed aged 8, absorbed in "Sailing the Optimist" by Sonnema, Kemper and Heijnen. Nautical Books ISBN 0 85177 445 8. If you can still get hold of it (perhaps second hand) it's written for kids - the oppies in the diagrams are called Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Idefix etc. but it is also an excellent book for adults learning to sail and race dinghies.

tennisgirl1 - Thank you for the above info. As I am thinking of obaining a copy for the grandchildren, please can you confirm if this version is in English. I have located secondhand copies via Amazon, but they don't mention whether they are in English or Dutch.

We still have our copy - it's in English. I have just had a look at it. It's not exactly what kids these days would call bright and fun - it's a bit old fashioned, but probably worth a punt secondhand.

'Optimist Racing' by Phil Slater. Phil helped Ben Ainslie when he first started sailing. I believe that it is available on Amazon, it may be a little technical.

Thanks for the suggestions - I flicked through the OPPi racing book and did think it a little technical for a novice -thought I might leave that until year two ( if there is a year two..) . Happy to report that a fellow forumite has made a kind offer which hopefully will provide some inspiration over the winter months.
