I am as guilty as any arks I g opinions of a yacht it’s seaworthiness ability to sail but probably we are looking for opinions that encourage our belief that the boat is what we want,in the main anybody who has a dream of putting to sea will have studied boats and design and whether a certain boat is ok for ocean sailing or creek crawling ought to be fairly obvious but history tells us that even creek crawlers have crossed oceans there are finer details about one design or another but these facts can only be grasped by the inquirer in person. On theses forums I have been told about voyages across the channel in a gale in a 23 footer quite feasible but the reality it’s a reflection on the skipper and his courage or misinterpretation of the Beaufort scale

We all seek to justify our own decisions, whether in choice of wives, boats, cars or music, and all comments need to be judged in this light. The solitary exception is the choice of food in a restaurant, where we would all agree that what the person on the next table is eating looks better than the mess on our own plate.

I have crossed the Channel in a gale, but only in a ferry, and have never had a wish to try in a boat, though a few trips in F5-7 in 26-34 footers have been quite enjoyable, at least after the event. I would never, I hope, encourage anyone to sail outside their personal flight envelope.

It's like internet searching behaviour - an awful lot of it isn't about searching for the evidence with which to arrive at the correct answer, it's searching for anything that confirms what we already think is the answer...

That is all true, but there are some on here (and elsewhere) whose opinions I would value highly, and others' whose opinions seem to me to require the application of a pinch, if not a tablespoon, of salt.

That said, I would welcome anyone's opinions to the effect that my choice of boat is not an appalling mistake, and that in choosing her I demonstrated profound wisdom and exquisite taste. ;)

Well, all I'll say in favour of my opinion that a Snapdragon 24 is a great little motorsailer is that, were I to go back to the point of buying her with the same (tiny) budget and the knowledge I have now, I'd buy her again.

Which means one of two things. Either I'm right or I'm terminally stupid. :)

I feel the same about GK24s - once a boat has looked after you and given you pleasure it’s hard not to get rose tinted about it.

I remember after owning a 31 footer for a few years (and loving the big step up in size) we went back to a GK24 as we were changing to chartering as main holidays. I was worried that it would spoil the memories of the old boat but quite the opposite - once you get to love a boat type then reason goes out the window.
