Opencpn and gribs

I have the plugin but can't for the life of me work out where the downloaded gribs need to go on a windows 10 machine so opencpn can see them.

Grabbed some gribs from meteoconsult.co.uk - is that the problem?

Is it possible to use gribs from predictwind?

Save the grib file to wherever you want and load it from there with the openfile icon. Opencpn will remember the location and load the most recent file from there when it starts up if you click that option in the plugin options.
If you have an email client set up it can create an email for you to send to saildocs which will then send back an eami lwith the gfs grib file.

Also very interesting overlaying synoptics or satellite weather images on top of the gribs using the weatherfax plugin.

Predictwind offers the US GFS and ECMWF free for 10. Days on a 50 km grid, Updated 12 hourly. There are many sources of GFS to 10 days on a 25 km grid, free, updated 6 hourly. No need or reason to use PW Unles you want ECMWF on a 10 km, 0.1 degree latitude/longitude grid. For Europe, raw DWD ICON is a good alternative to the GFS but only goes to 8 days 12 hourly From midnight and shorter periods (6? days) 12 hourly from 0600 data. If you want GRIB data beyond 19 days, the Saildocs email service goes to 15 days but you are entering the realm of the fairies.

Be careful, ECMWF runs 2 hours later than the other global models. For 4 hours in every 24, You will see GFS and ICON forecasts based on data 12 hours more recent than the ECMWF model. For a further 12 hours, GFS and ICON forecasts will be using dat 6 hours later than the available ECMWF. For much of the time, the different base times will not matter. I just feel safer using a forecast based on the most recent data. The fact that the ECMWF Model results are better than other models does not make it the most useful.
