Using O-CPN v2.5.0

I want to put some marks on a layer and have the ability to switch the layer on/off. This is for making chart corrections.

I can 'drop mark' easily but how do I assign the marks to a layer?

I can get a Temp Layer up from the Routes Manager but it always shows "0" items no matter how many I drop on the chart!

I don't know how to do layers in CPN. Have done that sort of thing in the past in software I helped write for the RAF many years ago, but I've not noticed the feature in OpenCPN.

However, I did mark a channel that had moved considerably by entering the new positions of the buoys as waypoints with red and green flashes as the waypoint symbols. It wasn't too bad in practice.

Kept the waypoints in individual files, so I guess it would be possible to delete them and reload them as a bodged way of turning them off and on.

OpenCPN saves navigation objects as .gpx files. If you place one of these files in a folder called layers (in OpenCPN's data folder) it'll be overlayed onto the chart when OpenCPN is next opened. There's a description in the help document.

I made a new folder in
C:\ProgramData\opencpn\
called Layers

so the path is

C:\ProgramData\opencpn\Layers\

How do I make a layer? If I now go to the Layers tab in Route manager I get a box like this:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=15939&stc=1&d=1328211520

The only options open to me here are "Import GPX" = there are no GPX files on my laptop.

"Temporary Layer" - takes me to the same place as "Import GPX", file manager.

Still can't work out 'how to' despite all your efforts!

Probably due to my poor explanation.

You've created the layers folder in the right place. What you need to do now is create some info to store there. Try the following...
  1. Open OpenCPN and create a couple of marks for demo purposes.
  2. Click the route manager icon and then click export all.
  3. Specify a filename of your choice and locate it in the layers folder that you've created.
  4. Press save.
You can now delete the marks from the chart.

If you quit OpenCPN and then restart it you'll find the marks are overlayed on the chart. They are uneraseable and uneditable but you can hide a layer if you wish using the layer tab in the route manager.

If you need to you can edit or remove the .gpx files from the layers folder.

Try dropping the waypoints where you want them. then right click on them and use waypoint properties to set names and appropriate icon. Go to route manager and select waypoint tab. The waypoints should be there.

Select export all and name them such as " layer 1" or "new starboard marks" and save in an appropriate folder .

They can then be switched on and off as a group using route manager .

If you go to toolbox, select "etc" then uncheck the waypoint lock box, waypoints can then be edited . they can then be saved as a different group name or use same name and overwrite the original file

I posted a bit here about using layers.

I haven't done this, so I am guessing that for WP's, create them, then on the WP's Tab export them, delete them, then Import them as per my other post.
You will hopefully then see them in the Layers tab which can be hidden by clicking the 'eye' symbol.

I think the OP wanted to use the layers feature, rather than collections of waypoints, as this provides 'permanent' overlays to the chart. His idea is to use this feature for correcting charts.

I would suggest that anything one would add to a paper chart in pencil is best done in OCPN using routes and waypoints; anything one would add in ink (eg chart corrections) is best done using layers. Just IMHO of course, but I reckon this is what the s/w designer had in mind.
