How easy to go from wonderful to washed up. Yesterday afternoon a small yacht on passage Ipswich to Southend made a bad call. They decided to beach outside Walton!! I think they needed fuel.
Unfortunately HW coincided with the storm last night. So instead of floating off, the rudder was smashed off.
Last I saw Sunday morning she was floating again but no one on board.

The Walton FB group showed much the same, afloat at anchor midday with people saying it couldn't continue under it's own steam because of the rudder. Wild winds last night too! We are on the outside pontoon at Titchmarsh and very blowy taking the dog for his midnight walk.

Looking at the thread about the rescue of Foulness, that's two shouts over the weekend where two separate lifeboats could not reach the casualty because they draw too much.

Does make me ask what is the use of a lifeboat that can't get someone out four feet of water?

It was a wild night on saturday, we were at half penny pier and thankfully on the inside. The water surge was absolutely horrific. Difficult place to be in the wrong weather that.

We were in Walton Pond behind a tide gate and even in there we were getting pushed about. I was very surprised to see the boat had survived the storm with just a broken rudder

Who says it was four feet deep?

Southend's Atlantic 85 would definitely have been able to get alongside a yacht in that depth of water.

I would be interested to know the outcome. Sadly we had to leave Walton at. HW

I have heard almost the full story tonight. They were put up for a night in Walton by a friend, who then drove to Ramsgate to pick up a long Shaft outboard - the short Shaft in a well was struggling in the step waves. That outboard failed in the mouth of the Crouch and they were towed in to Burnham by the RNLI. Inexperienced new owners, who really had a hard time, wading ashore in big waves with valuables above their heads, and a W&FYC member doing wonders to help them.

Couldn’t or just their were more appropriate resources to use instead, with less risk to the assets and crew?

Very glad to hear they and the boat survived. I will be in Burnham the weekend so will try to find out more.
Just wish I had a phone number.
