The Smit Cymyran, a 90 ft, 105 tonne survey and training vessel, is reported to have struck the East Platters rocks this morning. She was at the time on contract to the MoD, assisting RAF helicopters in SAR operations, and it wasn't long before the 6 crew were transferred by an SAR helicopter to the Skerries, whence they were taken back to Anglesey by R122 (another helicopter).

BBC news item

The BBC item intrigues me, because it describes the incident as occurring 7 miles East of the Skerries lighthouse and 2 miles from Carmel Head.

The East Platters are marked on my chart just under 0.5 Nm from Skerries lighthouse and about 1.3 Nm from Carmel head.

By the way, does anyone know where the West Platters are?

West Platters, an outcrop of low lying rocks a few hundred yards from the Lighthouse on the Skerries.

google has more on them

Plain old Platters (neither West nor East) is about 2 miles of Harwich. No rocks either...
