I found a very useful tips on a site and thought I'd share.

I have been deep fishing for quite awhile because of my infatuation with the ocean and the outdoor life. One thing that hinders me from enjoying my outdoor living was the inability to stay connect with my friends and families. I was introduced by a friend who told me about this website called 123usb.net . From there, I ordered a charging usb cable them which supposely, allows me to use my cellular phone with my latop to connect to the internet remotely. I was stunt when I connected for the first time. I didn't expect much since it only cost a few bucks. Anyways I was very pleased with what this little cable can do. I received the item in 2 days and it came with all necessary instruction and drivers and a simple guide on how to connect to the internet which having to purchase expensive software, I got this up and running with my sanyo phones in very quick and painlessly. Web pages load surprisingly quick. The perfect solution for any boaters who would love to keep in touch with the world while away from home or even just to check up on weather. Hope this help you guys out.

Dan

I have a usb cable from my laptop to my mobile. Al it does is charge up the battery! For on-line connection I prefer my bluetooth, and connect to my normal ISP without any problems

Sounds a bit like it. There's been a rash of these 'helpful' bits of product advice lately from newbies with no user profile. They read a bit like the cosy "Shopping Suggestions" section of Reader's Digest from back in the 1960's purportedly written by Katie Boyle or someone equally mumsie.

If they are sincere, I wish people would realise that this approach simply puts other's backs up. Dboy, if I'm doing you an injustice, please state that you have absolutely no interest in this company/product other than as a bona-fide customer.

If someone can suggest a way for me to keep in touch when on the high seas, weather and e-mail. Without the cost of an SSB, £3,000 with all the kit, I will be grateful. Of course I imagine it will take more than just a bit of wire.

Deep sea, its SSB or Satellite "C" , Mini "M" or "M" or Satphone (iridium etc), no other way I'm afraid (well think anyway). You can get SSB reciever, for weather info, but also need a computer. Not so deepsea, Navtex. Thats for weather.
E mail, SSB or Satellite are the only ways I know.

before i bought the cable, i have done quite lot of research about interentwireless. I personally bought this software called "snapdialer," not sure if anyone heard of it, anyways, combine with their data cable. i was able to connect to my sprint network with my laptop thru my vision plan which is only $10 a month. At first, i had hard a time installing their software so i called one of their tech support who were very kindly, walked me through the troubleshooting. what he did was basically added a new connection from my network connection and punched in some sprint netwrok dilaing #, and he told me that I was able to use my 3g phone with my laptop just by using the cable itself. I was amazed and upset at the sametime because i spent almost $40 for their software and realizing that i didnt even have to use the software. So he suggested me to this website where i can just purchase their usb charging data cable along with their instruction guide to setup up my connection. I was amazed how fast my connection is compare to 56k modem. Base on my research, I found that 3g phones are able to connect to the interent with the speed of 230 kbs with most phone carrier such as sprint, verison, a-mobile. If you dont have a interent plan with your phone carrier, the connection are limited to 19.9kbs. I hope people wouldnt go thru the same mistake as i did, and hope my 2 cent are helpful to guys.

Most of your last post is techie which I am not, trying hard to understand all the shorthand etc.
I to like others who have replied, would like to know if you have any connection to the manufacture or sale of the leads, or are you a genuine satisfied end user?

It's just a cable. You can buy a suitable cable for your phone from just about any decent phone shop, but usually cheaper online.

The software that makes the phone act as a 'modem' for your computer is usually supplied with the phone, or can be downloaded online.

However as others have said, there really is no need to use a cable if you pick a phone with infrared or bluetooth wireless connectivity (and assuming your laptop has IR or bluetooth connectivity as well)

The rest of it is usually quite straightforward, and any computer literate teenager will set it up for you in about 20 minutes! <g>

It's actually more straightforward than it sounds. Which bits you strugging with?, and we can break it down into digestible chunks

3g

You mention both "deep sea" and 3g. How do the 2 match up ? I must admit when I first found out about 3g speeds (from YBW I think) I was quite excited - other than the satellite solutions it did sound very interesting. However the coverage in many countries looks poor or non-existent with a few rare exceptions - Portugal, including the Azores, for example.

And isn't there an issue with networks and phones - i.e. if you choose one network and purchase a phone for it it's not going to work if you sail to another area which is supported by a different 3g network ?

I was looking at solutions for email and found this.

http://www.skymatewireless.com/

Global coverage, easy to use and can even monitor onboard systems when you are away. Running cost vary on consumption and it can be "dry docked" when required.

I looked into Skymate and had a demo about 12 months ago. Note there are some extra charges for non US coverage also the charges are per character - not quite a cheap as it seem unless your mails are very short. That being said, it does look to be a reasonable solution for offshore stuff.

Personally, I'm looking forward to all the 3G stuff and have decided against persuing 'email at sea' options.

3g = 3rd generation. It's the latest type of mobile phone technology. V fast connection speeds. It spreading slowly, but def not global - far worse than current mobile phone coverage at the moment

yeah, same sort of coverage as gsm, eventually, but it's going to take them a long time to install the transmitters to get that level of coverage!

Thanks for the tip bbilly, I have had a look at the website and ordered their bumpf. If it looks viable I'll post the details.
