I am not sure whether I dreamt this, or whether I received a junk e mail a couple of months ago.

Either how, can anyone confirm whether any of the online chandlers do a " 1st order discount" or whether they do promotions with a certain percentage off orders?

If so, do they ramp the prices up to take into account the discount of are they genuine?

I have a list of chandlery items that is forever growing and this could benefit me hugely ( if I didn't dream it).

Many thanks

When I fited out my current boat from new, I made a comprehensive list of everything I would need and it came to between £1K & £2K back in 2003/4.

I then copied the list to several suppliers asking for their best price for a single order and waited for the replies. In the end, despite the boat being in Scotland the order went to Yacht Parts in Plymouth who not only gave me the best deal but also very good advice.

Maybe worth doing something similar?

Manufacturers have to be competitive into a number of retail business models. On the one hand you have marina chandleries which have to recover huge overheads and staffing costs, and on the other mail order chandleries like ourselves.

Because we can locate our warehouse where rents are cheaper, and have economies of scale by having all our stock co-located to supply customers nationwide (and beyond) from one location, we keep the per sale overheads low and can therefore offer upto 15% off the RRP (not all products off the same trade discounts).

What you gain in saving you lose in immediateness however - so the marina chandleries still have a place supplying what you want immediately - while online chandleries save you money with planned expenditure (although next day delivery of high value items or large orders can still make sense).

Hope that answers you question,

Peter

MarineNeverStore used to do 10% off on a Monday, and I managed to get this discount off all the items they didn't supply!

I did place a '1st order' with Marinemegastore last year and the order - wait for it - did arrive. Though I did have to chase them up after a week of waiting. It was for a Tacktick wireless Wind Instrument - the basic one with 15% discount.

From a marketing point of view, what's the point of offering a discount and then not being able to supply in a reasonable time.
I never ordered again after reading about them on here and because I had to chase up that 1st order.
