I recently applied for online insurance with Craftinsure and received a policy document in the form of a PDF file via email. When I enquired about receiving a formal signed policy document through the post I was told that the PDF file was the formal document. I am under the impression that electronic files do not form legally binding documents. Is this true or is an electronic policy document water tight!

I don't know the definitive answer to your question but electronic documents are becoming more and more common. I had an insurance claim three years ago and had the discharge form e-mailed to me in Word format which tracked changes in the document. I typed my name in and e-mailed it back, job done. I would guess that most of the legal wrinkles have been ironed out by now.

Buying insurance is no different to buying anything else on line - the electronic docs will convince a court of the validity of the contract.
