One step closer to getting (small) boats into Maidenhead

Maidenhead Waterways Restoration Group has at last got outline planning permission for their proposal to get small craft on to "The Cut" through the centre of town. It'll be another few years yet before we see anything on the ground - let alone on the water - but it's moving in the right direction.

and what is there to do when you get there? When they say small I think they really do mean small - not likely to become a favourite access for the likes of us other than, possibly, narrow boats. :D

from what I can see, it will only be suitable for boats with a draught of 12.5 inches or less*. So I guess that counts out pretty much any powered craft.

* this draught will be reduced when the route passes the back off waitrose due to shopping trollies!

Anything that revitalises urban waterways gets my vote.

I just wonder if they will manage to get funding: £500k spent on initial planning alone and not a shovel shovelled :D

If they look for volunteers I'll gladly offer some help.

Exactly have you ever been to Maidenhead Town Centre , if you need a good example of High street retail decline, Maidenhead must be right up there.

Still at least all those punts and canoeists who will be able to get up there will spend loads of money:D

I'm with Watson on this - anything which means waterways, especially urban ones, are used and enjoyed has to be a good thing. Yes it will only be canoes and punts but who knows what small kid might find a lifelong passion for being on the water just from that?

Yes, Maidenhead is tragic for shopping and eating right now. It's my nearest town but yet I only ever go there to get on a train to London or go to Waitrose however that just might be changing too. There is a massive regeneration proposal on the table for the town centre/High Street called Kings Triangle which if it goes ahead could actually make Maidenhead a nice place to hang out again.

Stop being so negative. I suspect it's sour grapes because you bought too big a boat:

Moxon specs (Marina 16GT)
LOA - 4.96m
Beam - 2.09m
Draft - 0.16m
Speed - 30knots with 50hp. (mine does not have a 50HP !!)

Plus my mum lives in Maidenhead so I can trailer Moxon down and take the old dear on a shopping cruise :p
