One of those \'Splash\' moments

Jissel is a 24ft Snapdragon of 1970 vintage. The fuel filler appears to be part of the tank and is glassed into the deck. It has a 2"OD male thread, much finer than BSP. It's a similar arrangement to the old Westerlies, but bigger diameter and finer thread. The cap used to have a little chain attaching it, but this came unbrazed fron the cap a long time ago.

Given the location on the port quarter, a few inches from the transom, it was inevitable that the cap would go for a swim sooner or later. It just did. All attempts at retrieval have failed and no one I know of stocks the caps. I have a temporary cap found on a beach, but it's from a plastic water container and, while it keeps the rain out, it wouldn't do much against a wave or big wash over the stern.

Any suggestions?

If you can't locate a spare, then I'd measure the threads per inch with a ruler and use google to try and identify the actual pipe thread name. Then try a plumbing or hydraulic fittings supplier.

ASAP Supplies Ltd [see website] sell various types, new. You might also find one secondhand at FFoulkes Chandlery Barge, Bursledon.

ps I might have an old complete fitting somewhere. Can you give let me know the threads-per-inch?

[/ QUOTE ] By all means ferret around and see see if you can find a match. If you cannot then measure the diameter accurately and also the thread pitch with a thread guage (I doubt you'll be able to, but ideally also determine the thread angle. It'll almost certainly be 55° or 60°)

Then find a small enginnering works who can make one.

(What did my Dad do when he lost a filler cap? He set to and made one. I've got his lathe but unfortunately not the skill to offer to make one for you!)

The old Stuart Turner tanks had a very fine thread. One of those may fit, probably a few lying around in peoples garages, or possibly from Fairways Engineering?
