Had an intermitant fault develop on my Autohelm. When on auto it would flash to 3000 and switch to compass. After much checking of power leads and voltages found the factory fitted connection to the motor was so badly wired it was shorting out on a couple of stray strands. Bare stripped cable wire had been left exposed where there should have been none. Crap factory quality control.
Next tried to renew outhaul on boom as the string went twang last time out. Found it was a 2:1 internal arrangement with no access to the fixed end of the string unless I drilled out the rivets and slid the boom extrusion back off the gooseneck end fitting. Grr. Even worse at the mainsheet end found a bloody crack in the metal from the end up to the first mainsheet fixing. Now reviewing all options including seeing if the extrusion is still made as a renewal might the most prudent way forward.
What started out as a string renewal job at c£30 could turn into a four figure sum.
Pass me that G&T
