so there I was on the hard, kettle of water in the bucket stirring in the oxalic acid crystals with an old BBQ brush (new it would come in handy) and adding the wallpaper paste - crowd start appearing from nowhere (well the sun was out!) - what are you going to do with that? Clean the hull say's I pointing to the dull brown 4 year old stains all over the white (?) hull and feeling less confident than I sounded........there's this wonderfull boating forum on the internet adn this is the best way (apparantley).
So after a hoot of laughter when I suggested I was simply going to brush is on and wash it of 20 mins later I set of rounf the hull with the brush from the boats dustpan set (perfect!)........you could have heard a pin drop! the colouration just disappeared, and the effect was made even more obvious by the (deliberately) left patches of contrasting brown stain the first time round.
Trying hard not to look smug I was left fielding questions on water temperature, where do you get the oxalic stuff and why wallpaper paste............from people who had been laughing loudly only minutes before.

nice one forum!

I've bought my oxalic and I'm about to do exactly the same thing but I've forgotten the mix proportions. Is it a couple of tablespoons of oxalic to a pint of warm water?

Wallpaper paste is a great idea, hadn't thought of that until somebody mentioned it last week.

wonderful wallpaper paste

has all sorts of uses-

stir a packet of small seeds into a pint and use a piping bag to sow them evenly.

add a little pink emulsion paint, put in a large tub and give to any female acquaintance who turns 40, labelled "industrial anti-wrinkle cream, apply with a trowel"

any more?

I'm sure it'd be quicker & less painful just to jump in front of a bus..

Richard.

This reminds me of the fact that I've got a packet of wallpaper paste in the garage - which I bought to mix with something after reading it on this forum - which I could then use to strip paint / antifoul. Trouble is I forgot what to mix it with! In fact I'd forgotten all about it altogether until seeing this thread. Now whatever was it for?

Hi Tim3057 I used walpaper paste and caustic soda to remove my antifoul a couple of years ago to good effect, but my hull has been epoxied (I don't know if this makes a difference)If you do this wear long rubber gloves and eye protection at the least as it is strong stuff.

I didn't know what propostions to use so I followed the principle that 'as strong as I could make it'.
In practice I used 500g Oxalic acid crystals (ordered from my local chemist arrived in 48 hrs - 5 quid) and a kettle full (just over a litre) of boiling water. Put keettle of water in large bucket, added crystals and stirred in - they just disolved in this quantity. Add (any) packet of wallpaper paste and leave to cool - well I did.
Put on gloves and facial protection then using a dustpan brush (wall paper hanging one would do well too) apply to hull starting at top. Leave 20 mins or so and wash off to find new hull. Best to clean off thorougly then polish/wax/buff with a car polisher/whatever for a showroom finish.
Didn't even raise a sweat.
