The Open 40 Dangerous When Wet was abandoned in the Atlantic. The media (bless em!) reported the story that a "solo yachtsman on board a Trimaran with a broken mast was rescued by a cruise liner" Look...have a read of THIS ...what do YOU make of it?
Interesting reading, which seems to suggest the skipper lacked the experience to handle the boat or conditions. The boat looks undamaged in the photos, and the dismasting only occurred during the rescue
It is sad, but there are too many people going out sailing after their lives have been destroyed. It is a major change of pace and surroundings and has caused many odd stories. From abandoned boats to suicides gone wrong and blamed on pirates and divorces on channel 16.
Do not judge them harshly. We talked long hours with a lone sailor that was loosing it in the Pacific. Even the 2 of us lost the plot occasionally. When your mind is set on getting to an Island and nature decides you are not going. We also had a lady sobbing her heart on out on the SSB just because they could not sail into the horrible seas. It is also a known fact that sea sickness can cause suicidal tendencies. Just make it stop!
For this reason alone, I would recommend SSB radios for all. Give them help instead.
Call me cynical if you like but seasickness wouldn't stop many from activating the EPIRB some time during the two days when apparently he was putting out a mayday on the VHF and getting no response
It is not a matter of how he called for help but why. All I am saying is that irrational behaviour (as seen from a land based point of view) is more common than you think.
Very much my thoughts Tom! Still cannot understand why anyone would want to abandon a perfectly good boat when there is apparently no problem other than it is a bit choppy! Looking at the boats history, she has taken a hell of a lot in the past, and this episode seemed somewhat tame by comparison.
Following the link in the story to Sailing Anarchy also throws a few more questions that perhaps could be answered into the hat!
How do we know that he had a epirb,, other than their would have been one on the previous race?
How do we know that the epirb didnt fail?
How do we know that the sails were useable, they were furled, so how can anyone judge their state?
What a nonsense quote about having a headsail out to keep her bow pointed into the wind No boat that I have ever sailed will heave to or point up into the wind under headsail alone.
Were is the source citation for what is implied as a extract from the log of the cruise ship?
This site is highly critical of the "Media" (Rightly so) and somehow is arrogantly suggesting that they are not actually "media" themselves.
That article is supposition, hearsay, and rumour being passed as somehow more worthy than all the rest of the rubbish being churned out by the media.
Have another read of that piece, except this time assume its nonsense and then judge what they say. It seems to me that someone has produced this to bolster the reputation of the yacht by underming the skipper.
Grrr, that sort of stuff makes me so angry, having been on the receiving end myself on more than one occasion.
