Towed sub 'lost' at sea?
A former Royal Navy submarine has disappeared in curious circumstances whilst on tow to Turkish breakers.
The ex-HMS Oracle, which for many years was something of a landmark next to the motorway leading out of Portsmouth, was finally towed away from the John Pounds scrapyard by the tug Fairplay XIV on 30 October, as pictured below.
According to a report from Gibraltar, the tug was monitored on radar heading east through the Straits of Gibraltar a week later but at a speed too fast to be consistent for a tug and tow. The tug was subsequently tracked into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco where she remained for three days before mysteriously heading back towards Lisbon.
So all you folks heading south, watch out for flotsam
