Thought this was a nice picture

Illustrious.jpg

[ QUOTE ]
This recently unclassified photo was taken as the result of manoeuvres during Exercise NOBLE MARINER in May where HMCS Corner Brook was able to approach a high value unit, in this case the British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, without being detected. Anti-submarine warfare continues to be one of the most under-estimated and difficult threats for allies and potential adversaries to deal with.

“The picture represents hard evidence that the submarine was well within attack parameters and would have been successful in an attack,” says Commander Luc Cassivi, commander Submarine Division in Halifax. “This situation enabled the crew to demonstrate advanced warfare skills and their ability to get the job done. The commanding officer, Lieutenant-Commander James Clarke, and crew were obviously very satisfied and proud of their performance.”

HMCS Corner Brook being the previous HMS Ursula, one of 4 ssk's sold to the Canadians by the UK at knock down prices...

As a Canadian I would just like to say thank you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

From: UK High Commission in Canada

To: Admiralty, Northwood (Sales)

Msg IN:
They fell for it. Let the screen CO know that switching off the dunking sonar worked as expected.

High value unit? Not a proper aircraft carrier like the yanks have, nor I would guess with proper anti submarine escort like the yanks do.

Comes from trying to keep in the game with a budget thats far too small. How long before we finally stop posturing and accept we cant keep up?

Still the paint work looks OK from that angle. Used to be responsible for that part of ship on ILLUSTRIOUS!

As a Fghter Controller I never go too interested in the ASW stuff - how does the song go......... Whales, Whales, Pingers kill f*^king big Wales!

Suppose I might have been a tad upset if I had to swim home!

In my day as an NS man -49/50 ASW was all sonorbuoy; at the time I saw the top secret plans - they were taken to the Russkies many years later. Barracudas were the workhorses soon to be followed by the Gannet at Gannet the ASW station in N. Ireland, altho' subsequently a nameless friend said that during the cold war they got so close to a Soviet capital ship that they would have been too close to have attacked it.

Not very nice at all, the horizon is all wonky and the composition is poor too. The main subject does not stand out very well in boring grey either. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now somewhere nearby there should be a frigate acting as goalkeeper or there would have been not so long ago specially if it is an air threat exercise as well as submarine but no doubt due to cuts the carrier just has to fend for itself

I know I have mentioned this before, but.....

There are two types of ships, Submarines and Targets!!

Looks like an excellent piece of manouvering by the submarine skipper, who will, of course, been trained by the RN!

Sold? The informed understanding is, from the undisclosed final deal that, at best, they were given to the RCN, or, at worst, you were paid to take them.

It was a sad day for the Britain & the RN when the defence policy was changed to forego a 'conventional' capability in favour of an all nuclear one.

We were world leaders in the art of littoral warfare, that art now sacrificed as a combined result of US pressure and successive swingeing defence budget cuts.

Whine over!

I retired at the right time and now I will sail!

Indeed Brendan, apologies, it was widely reported at the time as you say.

My memory is fading now, did the reports also mention Canada's secret biological warfare and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programmes?

Tongue in cheek and unspun!

As an ex RN FAA Aircrew "Pinger" If that is a genuine photo taken by a "hostile" s/m whilst the carrier was screened by ASW warships and ASW helicopters activly searching for submarines involved in a CASEX (Combined Anti Submarine Excercise) wargames, there would have been some backsides kicked !...

I suspect that had the Carrier had a screen of modern ASW ships, aircraft and Merlin Helicopters as they would in a war environment playing for real the chances of a a U class s/m (good as they are), getting that close in deep water without being detected in those weather conditions is pretty slim !

Sailing is much more fun !

You can see clearly from the line down the middle of the picture that the sub captain has merely tried to pass off a polaroid from a magazine centre spread....

Right? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Submariners have always enjoyed popping of a green grenade or two for the aircraft carriers, the Upholders are good boats and quite capable of getting inside the screen. Yes modern ASW is goodbut so are modern boats.
