One Design Fleets that have moved to fibreglass

I am currently doing some research into Classic One Design Racin Fleets that have succesfully incorporated and allowed fibreglass hulls to race alongside the original wooden hulls with equal handicap.

I believe there are some Classes that have managed to do this effectively and thus prolong that classic design and lines of the Class. I also vaguely remember reading an article in Classic Boat a few years back about a Class on the Broads (?) that did this, but cannot find the issue now.

If anyone could point me at any such Classes or info on the Web I would be very grateful

Many thanks

I think the folkboats do, but whether they have the same handicap or not is something you will have to research.

Could it be the Broads One Design or "Brown Boat" which celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2000. New boats are now made in GRP as well as the traditional wood.

Brown Boats are sailed at WOBYC, Norfolk Broads YC and the RN&SYC.

Thames Estuary One Design (TEOD) and Estuary One Design (EOD) currently raced by Essex Yacht Club at Old Leigh. A few wooden boats left but now mainly grp. Alexander Yacht Club (Southend on Sea) used to be the centre of TEODs but now seem to have gone mainly to Essex YC.
Not sure about handicapping

This is great feedback! Thank to all for you input.

To be more specific I am looking at Keelboats classes and I will endeavour to contact these Classes directly.

If anyone else knows of One Design Keelboat classes that have successfuly incorporated Fibreglass hulls racing alongside Wooden hulls with equal handicap I am very interested. Any links to web sites would be useful as well

Thank you

Over here in Norway we have a one class design of wooden keel boat called 12.5's (something to do with the sail area) they look abit like the Sunbeam. a bit smaller then the 'Dragon'. They where all built round the war years 50? years ago. One guy had one built in fibreglass matching it in very detail. The class association would not even measure it. The guy had spent nearly £40,000 pounds on building it.

Thanks again for all the input.

Viking - your point is the very reason why I am researching this. There are discussions in our own Class (a Classic South Coast Fleet) about the possibility of allowing fibreglass boats alongside the traditional wooden boats. I hope we can pre-empt the scenario you highlight by contacting other Classes that have done this successfuly. I hope that we can learn by their experiences and persuade our Class Association to measure a fibreglass boat. The key thing is how to ensure that thay race equally as a one design.

Any other Class experiences would be most welcome.

Thanks

I believe that the Waveney OD keelboats raced at Oulton Broad are now produced in GRP to complement the original wooden fleet. Not sure whether they have a class association or website but contacting Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club would be a good start.

Thanks to all who helped my personal research earlier in the year. A lot of discussion and research has subsequently taken place by the Class Association, and we can now add the Portsmouth Victory Class to the list of One Design Fleets moving to modern materials.

The Class from Portsmouth ( web page ) has voted to invest in taking a mould from this years' Cowes Week winner, Z23 Zephyrus, in order to try to create an FRP hull that can race at 'level pegging' alongside the existing wooden boats. We're hoping to have the first hull on the water by early next year and there is already interest both from existing owners of tired wooden hulls and potential new members to the Class.

The Hull will probably be a three piece moulding (Port, Starboard & Deck) and will retain the traditional wooden Spars, Coamings, rubbing strakes and toerails. The Class requirements for a black hull will remain and, if all goes to plan, it should be very difficult to tell the old boats from the new boats once afloat.

Watch this space!
