rarely is there something quite so amusing as taking someone who is scared witless of heights on a tame open top bus journey!

.......I did warn you that they were random!

Beautiful pics, #10 is especially nice, imho.

Please excuse my ignorance, but where did the open top bus ride take place? Amazing looking place.

Good collection FF, liked the wee scotty dog lying next to the heater outlet.

Was that a J boat with the masses of sails?

I'm a little ignorant on what it actually is Callum, but not a j class, they are a bit bigger. I guess someone more knowledgeable (or who can be bothered to google) could tell us what it is from the sail number.

the open top bus goes from Yarmouth on a circuit (which in in my opinion its best not to get off...but then I'm miserable old git as I was informed by SWMBO) to the west of the island right up to the old Needles battery which is where the photo was taken. The last couple of hundred yards is quite stunning as the bus zig zags up to the top and turns round... you do keep your fingers crossed it does not have brake failure, every now and again you get a bus driver who thinks they are on the Italian job and it does get exciting.

Now that you mention it, the boat length looks a little short. Maybe our Carribean friend Martin, aka Bajansailor would know, as he sails on a real J class.

Ok, got it now, thanks. I hadn't realised that there is such a grand scenery in the west end of the island. On a trip a few years ago, we took a rental car to the Isle of Wight and drove to Lake but missed the west side. Beautiful place all the same!

Wow - we are on VHF you know - I might have taken notice if you had called up. Our daughter has just had an op so SWMBO couldn't come out. That's my pal Gavin at the helm - he's new to boating so I reckon I was keeping my eyes forward at 16 knots so didn't see you. Off to Lymington for a rally. She does ride very nose up doesn't she - that's with the trim tabs pretty much full on as well - wonder if that's the effect of the dinghy on the stern. Thanks for posting the photos - any chance of copies of the full resolution originals? If you haven't got my email PM me and I'll let you have it. Cheers

Thanks FF. Nice bit of randomicity! I did the walk up to Needles lighthouse (from car park above alum bay) not so long ago - I didn't know there was a bus!

Stuart, sorry, we should have called but TBH we were not that close, just a good zoom and obviously our closing speed meant that I didn't have that long!! I will indeed send you the originals.

When we first got seabird she ran bow up as we also always have a dinghy on the transom but I improved our handling and ride angle dramatically by adding just another 10m of anchor chain, I would certainly recommend doing this if that was you with full tabs down...you may even want to try 15m...

in fact you can just get on the bus by the little round about before the car park and just go up to the Needles battery and back... but having walked it a few times its a nice walk

Some beautiful pics indeed, thanks for sharing them.
Do you know anything about that "Blastoff" speedboat?
She has a Fountain 42 Poker Run flavour, but I don't think she actually is one...

The race boat is a Championship Winning 38ft Fountain originally built for the owner of the company, multiple World Champion Reggie Fountain.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the pointer.
I don't think Reggie would have approved the repowering with diesels, though. And not even staggered, I would guess.
In fact, the latest 38' that were built, with a couple of staggered Merc 700 and #6 outdrive, could achieve 3-digits speed stock, straight out of the factory, as opposed to the 90 "in racing conditions" mentioned in that website....
Regardless, she must be a great ride indeed! :encouragement:
