Classic yachts is one passion of mine, but so is music, and I ideally like to combine the two. I would place the HiFi discreetly onboard, but don't require CD or Tape. I would like to be able to just connect my I-POD.

Would anybody have any recommendations of a small, robust, rust resistant unit that I can plug my MP3 unit into that would survive the rigours of a wooden boat at sea?

You can buy combined iPod charger/transmitters which send your music by very short range (a few metres) FM signal which can then be picked up by such as an onboard car radio. I have one, a Griffin 'Roadtrip', which works well. Can't recall where I bought it, but Google should give plenty of hits.

Some pedant will probably be along in a minute to tell you such a set-up would breach Ofcom rules.

Nope, law was changed about Christmas. They are now perfectly legal.

Bit disapointed with mine (Belkin Tunecast 2) because the range is very limited-it needs to be less than 1m from the reciever to work.

The same arrangement may be on the distant horizon for me. Vague notion that there are "docks" for dropping an iPod into that contain amp + speakers. You don't need tape or cd so could ask a Dixons etc about what's available. When I was still working in a mainstream school I would have asked any 14 year old. Do you need radio ?

No radio required. Just the iPod and it must run of 12v as I don't do marinas.....yet! Have not seen a 12v docking station though, most are 240v are they not?

Hi folks I went down the low tech route..
I have a usb mp3 player that I take out to the boat there I have speakers from a pc that are powered by batteries....
It works very well ... oh I have a solor charger for the batteries
low teck but it works lol

I also have a Griffin Roadtrip, ex ebay for £20.

Provides an iPod dock including charger and bracket and a short range FM transmitter to the car radio. Works a treat except in Italy where there appear to be local radio stations every 100kHz and there is little free airspace!

On the boat I have a Blaupunkt Nashville DAB 35 which does DAB,MP3 from SD cards, traditional AM and FM, will swallow CD's and drive a CD changer and ... has a direct Ipod interface cable.

I've got a apple HI Fi which is on the apple website runs and charge when pluged into shore power and when away runs on batteries. Sound really good too.

I bought an Ipod dock from argos - will plug into any MP3
player. Runs from either mains or 6 1.5v batteries.
Very good sound reproduction
