Hi,
Just wondered if anyone had some advice for finding some used foresails for my Itchen Ferry (apart from "go out and buy some new ones you tight b**&^%"). Better still, anyone have something suitable they are willing to part with for a reasonable sum. I am nearing the end (ok, it never ends does it!) of a major rebuild and the pot is looking rather stretched at present so I'm on the look out for a used jib and foresail. I have some very heavy flax cotton versions which are ok in a gale but pretty bad the rest of the time.
The next major purchase will be a new suit of sails but this is some way off if I want to remain a married man.
The flax cotton sails are beautifully made by Goldfinch of Kent but just don't do well in light to moderate airs and the jib has suffered some rot damage - the Main, although heavy sets a treat. The sizes are as follows:
Jib - Luff 23'6", Leech 15', Foot 10'6"
Foresail (Hanked) - Luff 17'6", Leech 15', Foot 7'6

Incidentally, the boat is Gaff Cutter rigged, 22'6 LOA

I've tried a few boat jumbles but to no avail. I'm based in Essex.

Thanks
Simon

Try hanging around a club that races Dragons. They'll take the racing edge off a genoa in a week and are usually pleased to pass the sail on for remarkably few pounds. Chris Jeckells is sometimes worth a call. OF

When you say "flax cotton" it leaves me confused; are they flax or are they cotton? the two are very different fabrics. Flax is a very coarse canvas, and is suitable for vessels like a Brixham Trawler, where cotton would be inadequate. Cotton, on the other hand, is more like a stout bedsheet, and has been used for that before now.
Peter.
