Received my letter stating that the club feels that I will be a valuable asset, have coughed up the wedge and will be propping up their bar in due course, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the BCC who will obviously wish to show, despite rumours to the contrary, just what a generous bunch of chaps they are.
Off to ebay got to get some seafaring togs, need a blazer and some whites something like this perhaps ?

I thought it was the number of buttons on the cuff that mattered. Byron will know.

OK! Here goes. . .

Blazers single or double breasted with shiny buttons are worn by Crew.

Owners should wear Reefers 6 button double breasted with Jet Black Buttons.
(The Club will probably supply a set of Buttons with their Crest on).

White Trousers after 7pm are a NO NO. Reefers should be worn with Dark Grey, Blue or Black Trousers. Under no circumstances should any of the rig-outs be worn with boating shoes. Regular black shoes should be worn.

Of course these days very few Clubs adhere to these traditions although I do remember an incident in the 1960s when the then Commodore of the Squadron told a member to go and change when he was still in the bar with Whites on after 7pm.

I can't remember what the number of sleeve buttons mean. My Tailor did tell me once. I do know he insists that all my sleeve buttons actually work. I also know that originally they were on top of the sleeve to stop Troops wiping their noses with their sleeve (1st instituted by Frederick the Great of Prussia) Also this is the derivation of the term "Snottie" given to Midshipmen in the Royal Navy.
