U may recall some light hearted banter between me and Oldgit relating to Island Bashing and the like following his recent foray up the Thames.

Well, I was a little puzzled by the whole affair, I mean islands on the Thames are pretty easy to see and there was no fog or anything like that and Sue swore on the poop deck that he hadnt had a tipple.......

So anyways, last weekend I found an island to play with and carried out a few tests to see what the problem was and I think I've solved it. I make no charge for this investigation and make the results freely available for the wider benefit of the forum.

I analysed all the factors and you can see the conclusion I came to <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.boatsontheweb.com/> Website, Photo Gallery, Chat Room, Burgees

Seems explanatory enough to me Tony :)
Tell me, are those arrows marked ok set at the correct angle for initiating a "Williamsons turn" per chance. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Very VERY good!!

It must have taken a "super computer" to come up with your findings. I think you are doing yourself no favours in supplying this information FOC. Just think how much we pay for all our charts and here you are supplying invaluable information for nowt.
I bow to your great wisdom.

Do you think you could supply the same reasoning to the ColRegs? It would make life on the boat much less complicated........

I agree the "straight on" option is more difficult as this particular island is filled with reinforced concrete and you'll damage more than a pulpit.

The left hand (port) option is not ideal as there are a number of sticky-out bits on that side and the locals will definitely not expect you to be there.

Trouble is that everybody uses the right hand side whether going up- or down-stream. Approaching it from the other side; if you do a bit of "right hand down Mr. Philips", you might catch a number of Raters - they are an endangered species being a restricted one design, but it's worth the challenge.

Just thought I'd mention that.

Re: Very VERY good!!

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. I will persevere with my free at point of delivery approach for the time being, as I feel it offers the best way of building a following for this new and unique approach to forum issues...a picture truly is worth a thousand words, dont you think?

It would be nice to apply the same approach to the ColRegs I agree......unfortunately the techniques I have developed so far only permit the analysis of a single moving target relative to fixed locations. I have it in mind to investigate additional moving targets in version 2 but this may take some time as I first have to arrange to get the boat refloated and repaired following last weekends trials......all donations will be acknowledged.....

Re: Very VERY good!!

As defending council for oldgit. I submit that the Island was indeed a moving target and mearly jumped momenterily to one side, thus causing the aformentioned colision. As you have already admited that your although wonderous tequnique is however unable to detect two moving targets. I submit that you have no means to prove the contarary.

As always, an uninformed phillistine attempts to get litigious at the earliest possible moment.

My I remind you of the long established principle of 'de minimis' .....or ' the law does not concern itself with trifles.......In your case this is extended to encompass all manner of puddings including treacle......

What brilliant idea - arrows on the water .... tell me are the painted on the water or plasticy type ones just laying there ?

I can think of lots of bits of doggy water where an arrow or two placed on the surface would help (as opposed to under the water !). I mean just look at all the road markings and they don't cause any problems !! ????
