'Abseil', good moboistes, the word is 'abseil'.... or 'rappel' if you are a Francophile.

It's an initiative kicked off by a recent item in PBO News Online, asking for volunteers. It seems the Corporation of Trinity House support various maritime charities, and this is one of their fundraising events. 'It seemed a good idea at the time' but - despite not having done anything remotely like abseiling for over half-a-century, it's too late - I can't back out now....

....especially as 9 or 10 generous fourmeers have been actively 'giving' today via 'JustGiving's website here:

https://www.justgiving.com/wil-bailey/

Donations in the past couple of days have soared past £160, and maybe - just maybe - we'll get over £200 today, before the close of play. You can join the 'forum giving team' by dropping in on the 'JustGiving' website, clicking on the DONATE button, and waving a debit card at your scree. What's more, you can get some more mullah out of that nice man Danny Alexander by invoking the magic words 'Gift Aid'..... or simply pushing that button instead.

Here's the gospel for the Gummint's own website https://www.gov.uk/donating-to-charity/gift-aid

Higher rate taxpayers

If you pay tax at the higher income tax rate of 40% or above, you can claim back the difference between the higher and basic rate on the value of your donation:

through your Self Assessment tax return
by contacting HMRC and asking them to amend your tax code

Example

You donate £100 to charity through Gift Aid - they claim 20% to make your donation £125. You pay 45% tax so you can personally claim back £31.25 (£125 x 25%).

See? You gift £100 ( or even more ;) ) to Trinity House, tick the 'Gift Aid' box, and they get your gift bumped up another 20% by the Treasury. You then have your accountant chase HMRC up for the diff between that Basic Rate of Tax and your Higher Rate, whch all comes back to you. Gross, eh?

So your £100 initial gift ends up costing you, with tax back, only £68.75.... and the charity gets £125, thank you very much. Clever....

So what are you waiting for....?
