I want to get hold of some winches of the type that has the handle permanently attached at the bottom. Does this type have a specific name or were they made by a particular manufacturer? Also keen to hear from anyone with a set gathering dust in their shed. Thanks

Gibb made some - usually in black with a silvery bottom handle and a socket in the top for a top handle as well. Many Centaurs had them fitted.

Barton made the 602 though it is quite small I think and I don't think the handle is actually permanently attached because you can still buy the (plated brass) handle separately. It is retained in the bottom socket by some sort of springy knob . You can see the handle here and I have seen the winches still for sale in Chandlers. Its black with silvery vertical ribs on the drum.

I have a pair of Tuphnol and bronze winches which the Barton 602 handle fits into in a similar way.

You see these for sale quite often. Mine aren't though.

I very much prefer bottom handle winches to the top handle type with handles for throwing overboard....and if you think that's an exaggeration ask yourself why they make floating handles for them!

The Stella class used to be sold with galvanised Viking winches.
Made in Leigh on Sea.
It was class rules until about 1972 that one used these winches.
As soon as the rules changed most owners changed them.
I still have my pair in the garage
You can have them for a tenner each if you want to come & get them
Email me at Samuel@slongley.fsbusiness.co.uk if you want them. I live in St lawrence Bay on the river Blackwater

there are some made in holland, in bronze, i think there was an article in sailing today about winches, these were there, also some made in australia and normally quite a few at boat jumbles, peeps like the new ones these days, but lots of classic yachts have them.
