Old type?? Cutlass Bearing

I am trying to replace the cutlass bearing on my 1951 Elkins built Sloop.
However when removing the old one, It appeared to be made of some sort of
graphite/lead. Very soft no outer shell and only removed by peeling away from
inside of stern tube, The problem I now face is the shaft is 1 1/8 and the
tube 1 1/4 so very little clearance for modern type of bearing. Anyone come
across this before or any advice. The boat has been in constant use for the 50
years Reengined in 1998 so it must have been replaced at some stage. I dont
fancy replacing tube gland coupling or combination if ther is a better
solution.

Sounds as if it is not a cutlass at all, but a white metal bearing.

I take it you have a conventional greaser & a stern tube full of grease.

If so you take the housing to a machine shop & have it remetaled.

We had similar on our old boat & had them re metaled a number of times, until the bronze would stand it no more, then had new housings made to take a water lubricated cutlass.

We used G Spicer ltd, or their agents willman eng at teddington, 01 977 4366, last used them in the mid 80s, not since as boat went to NL after then.

Norris of Isleworth would be ableto do it as well, & advise
