can any of the wise experienced usual posters here advise if, long term, will it be cheaper to buy an old £ 4-6k 2 stroke 90hp rib or dory, or a young 4 stroke £ 8-10k equivalent, with a plan to sell after 2-3 years?

4 stroke will obviously cost bit less in fuel, but the big costs will be depreciation on younger boats v repairs to older boats/engines.

I'm more inclined to a 5m dory than a 6m rib, but worry the depreciation is much worse as everyone seems keener on ribs. For my use, (solent messabout, fishing, camping & waterskiing) a doy is fine, I'm not into wavejumping offshore heroics, and am a bit suspicious about leaky sun faded rib tubes hence inclination to the larger dories.

I have recently bought an older 6m rib with a 2 stroke 130hp yam on the back, had the engine serviced, had to do a few jobs on it as it hadn't been to well looked after, tubes in reasonable condition, It goes well 40K! I have done around 70 miles with it without issue so far, If you buy one right as I did then you wont loose to much money when you come to sell it, my money would be on a rib, as you say they are more popular!

I've noticed that the backside seems to have fell out of medium size rib prices in last 12 months so there's quite a lot 5,6,7m with 70 - 130's at decent prices. Can't see you blowing a fortune on a 6 grand rib.
