hustler 35 1973, old style (leaky!) alum fram windows where the frame slpits into two halves

the glass seems to be in a gutter type seal within the aluminium - glass 5mm thick, alum channel 9.5mm. where can i get another sealant strip like that? or has someone done an amazing job with a sealant gun??

thanks

well i located the glass within the alum surround with bits cut from an ice cream tub lid, and liberally squeezed in silicone sealant. then sikaflex to alum/grp join. watertight to enthusiastic buckets of water

thanks

You may well get the sealing strip from Seals+ Direct http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/

If you prefer the mastic Sealant route there are many to choose from.

Sikaflex 296 is the Sikaflex specifically for glass glazing

One of the problems with the channels is that over time condensation or leaking cause the bottom to corrode through. I had mine rebuilt and the whole channel was filled with the Sikaflex for glass. Of course if I ever have an issue with a window frame then it may be an issue separating the halves again. The frames were sealed to the GRP with bedding tape which had a foam like consistency, solid as well and at 3mm thick easily sealed against any irregularities.

google Hadlow Marine, they have a lot of data on this including some 'how toos'.

I resealed one of my windows this year. It is a split aluminium type like yours. I tried seals direct who were very helpful and sent my a sample U shaped rubber strip but unfortunately it didn't fit so I had to use mastic which is going to make it much more difficult to dismantle next time (hopefully not by me). I used PU40 from toolstation which is much cheaper than Sikaflex. I didn't use spacers as it is only 750mm long and I've found that they can be a source of further leaks. Just make sure the glass is central in the recess. I sealed the frame to the GRP with butyl tape from the caravan shop. No leaks so far.

cheers for replies - i have another 7 to do

main problem with this window was that half of any rain that hits the mast is curiously diverted down over it by the raised deck around a grab rail extending most of the deck...
