Good afternoon:

I spent four very comfortable and enjoyable winters in Girne in the late 80's and am considering re-visiting in the future.

Would like to know from anyone who has spent time in North Cyprus lately if it is still possible for private yachts to berth in this harbour. If not what are the alternatives close to Girne?

Cheers

In the absence of a reply from someone with more recent experience, we were there (boatless) in 2005 and, as I recall, the place was jammed with tripper boats, no space for the likes of us. There is a new marina further along the coast, and someone on here has experience of it.

The old harbour is a TIP and jammed with the local boats. Best to avoid it. Just east is the ferry port and DELTA MARINA The manager is a very charming young lady called Miss Ayjan and very helpful. From there it is a short walk to the huge supermarket but a trek into the old harbour.

+1 However, at Delta Marina no boats are allowed in the water after 1st October, they are all lifted onto the hard. The Harbour is open to the NE which is where most of the strong winds come from.

The new Marina some 40 mile east of Girne is called Karpas Gate Marina, We spent the winter 2011/12 there. Would never go back again.

+1 Yes agree completely!

You can always try the south (Greek) part of the island.
Latsi at the north, or Pafos, or Limassol new marina (nice but expensive though 50% discount for the first year), or Larnaca.

No chance at all in Larnaca. In a dreadful state and supposed to be under repair. Latsi is FULL and Limasol only for millionaires. Might just be able to get into Paphos.

All repairs were fully completed about six months ago. New floating docks and water and electricity is installed everywhere. A lot of visitors (mainly from Israel) go there nearly every week.

Hi, Many thanks for the up-date. Always good to have some on the ground. My info came from a yacht that had tried to get in an could not, this was in MARCH. It seems they have certainly moved quickly.

Hi im new to the forum and have been looking for a yearly berth in Cyprus.
I have come across Karpas Gate it looks very good? Why wouldn't you go back was there a problem? I would appreciate your comments.

KGM is a big 5* marina. FACT.

However these are the problems
1 Miles from anywhere
2 The water is BROWN and not drinkable
3 The electical system is still not correct
4 Many of the showers do not work-same for the taps (ablution blocks)
5 Wi Fi not good at all on the berths but good in the office area
6 There is one restaurant and it has a very cold atmosphere with expensive food which was not 5* quality
7 No qualified technical staff apart from the very good mechanic

I state all the above purely as MY OPPINION. It is good as a boat park and for a few days visit. Also they have now provided a shuttle bus service. it is free up to the local village but you have to pay to go anywhere further afield.

The staff are friendly and try to help.

There is also a Beach Club, which is free to berth holders and is very good.

Just reading this and wondering what was the problem with Karpaz gate we are planning to cruise in the next couple of years and we have a place in cyprus (south) but thought Karpaz looked like a good overwintering option. We are in cyprus for new year and were intending to take a look but would value opinions.
