Last week left three by the marina skip, but not in it. All 3 clean, shiny and pressure OK but just on 5 years old. Were gone a couple of hours later.

Local Scout group. I'm sure the kids would learn lots from using them to extinguish fires. Too few people have ever used an extinguisher in anger. It is amazing how useless they actually are.

I keep mine in my shed at home, on the assumption if I have a fire, one or two may work. Incidently I replaced the engine auto fire extinguisher last year as the gauge was in the red sector, put in my shed(I don't like throwing things away immediately) and it now reads OK! Whats happened? I did enquire and they were not serviceable.

The last one I had to get rid of, the harbour master was quite happy for me to let it off into his wheely bin then put the empty in. Having seen the way it worked, I wish I'd kept it - it was only 5 years out of date!

If they have a dial, an annual shake and they're good as long as the pressure's OK and there's no significant rust. Just don't expect a 1KG powder jobby to put out anything much bigger then a dog-end.

Oh, and don't squirt anything under pressure on a fat fire - you only spread it. A lid or damp tea towel is far more effective. Most especially, don't use water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzwYTlJX8Mo

Our local fire station run demonstrations for businesses, so I assume they would be eager to take any old extinguishers to use for that.

I have a fire blanket aboard for that sort of thing, as should we all. And fire blankets don't get out of date very quickly

I've got most of my powder extinguishers (6 of 7) mounted horizontally, keeps them well shaken.

Having used one, I found that the standard 1m x 1m wasn't large enough to cover your hands as you deploy it, so I got a larger one: http://amzn.to/1eiwWZm

The only part that seems to degrade is the label, so I made my own ...

When I bought my new to me boat it came with a single very out of date fire extinguisher, so I bought two new ones, and decided to discharge the old one - on activating the firing mechanism, nothing - zilch... which reminds me I'd better check the expiry/ re-fill date on the ones I bought.

Took my five year old small powder ones to the fire station, I was told as long as the arrow is in the green they should be ok. Now have large powder, small powder, large co2 and small 8 sec all purpose.
