this weekend I took the boat up the Ouse - I used a topper mast to get allow me to sail a bit without rasing the whole rig (Katie L is a gunter)

but I have a better plan

I shall leave the gaff, boom and roller feefing ashore and raise a loose footed dinghy main along with a genoa with a luff wire on a two part purchase

I did something similar on the slug and it worked really well

the Katie L mast is heavier but with a two part purchase

I reckon that an old wayfarer main and genoa would be ideal - but a GP or enterprise main and genoa would do

maybe even a laser main

I reckon that my mast is about 22 foot long

if anyone has any sails hanging around their garages I wondered if anyone was interested in a swap

I think I may also have an old dinghy sail knocking about somewhere. IIRC it is also blue. Will have a hunt for it.

I have done some guesses on my mast length and I reckon that an e=Ent, GP or Wayfarer would fit pretty well

the jib wants to be shorter in the luff to clear the bikes on the bow

and since these dinghies are bermudan rigs and the genoa will be flying from the top of the mast that should just leave enough space for the two part purchase I will need to raise the mast with Jill's help

gonna be great

I am planning to fit a fairly high crutch on the back the boat to catch the mast - that will mean that the first hard bit of the lift is already done and will give us space to stand under the downed mast

I am planning to take the boat up to Ripon and also to Leeds and then what they call around the island - which is Trent to Lincoln to Boston and then back around the outside

some of the canals scythe across the fens and it was great fun in the slug

the wind was really howling - the water was as flat as a pancake so she was chugging along at hull speed
