Where do old boats go to die?

It strikes me that more and more are being built and launched each year, yet you never hear about an old boat scrap yard.

Presumably if the trend continues, we will all be able to walk across the Solent before too long.

Well, we've got a great pile of them at our club, mostly unlaunched and often unloved.

It will become a big issue. We have burned the odd one, but thats a disaster never to be repeated. You can chop up with a chainsaw, but will your local Dumpit take the results? And apparently, old bangers are keenly sought by some members of this forum /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Having nursed some of those old boats I can tell you they go to homes with idiots like me who didn't have the capital to buy better, and limp along with the repair bills, and the odd sail, until they realise that even with the fun of boat therapy you have to see sense some day, but I did have good memories!

Now I have something much more sensible, but I miss the ripple of water against clinker, don't miss the space with plastic, nor the lack of mildew and damp, nor the smell of rot!

I learnt a lot with old ropey boats, how not to overtax the old uns with clapped out gear, how to sail without all the kit I do now have, so thanks to all the folk who had the funds to buy them in the first place, and then to recycle them!!
