Im buying an outboard for my son I have 2 choices a 2001 Yamaha 4ac 2 stroke in spotless condition for 600 euros or a new mercury 3.5 , 4 stroke 1000 euros. It’s tempting to buy new one. I believe the Yamahas are extremely reliable though.

That's an interesting one. They are both similar weight. All good condition outboards are usually reliable. I would think the 4hp2t will be a lot more powerfull than the 3.5 . A brand new one though, will have many years before it needs parts.
If you want to plane a dingy then the 2t. If its just to reliably plod along the 4t ..
Yes the yamahas just keep going..

A second hand yamaha 20 years old in good condition about £350 - £450 max
There are a few low use examples around for £600. . They are just over £1000 brand new.
A friend picked up an immaculate 5hp yam 2t for £350.
Sometimes your lucky, other times there are just not enough to go around.
