Thieves have stolen thousands of litres of diesel with a retail value of more than £8,000 from a filling station.
They used specialist equipment to pump the fuel from an underground tank at Hullbridge, near Rayleigh, Essex.
Staff at the Coventry Hill Service Station, Lower Road, discovered the theft at 08:30 GMT on Sunday.
Two men are thought to have parked a Luton van on the forecourt for about two hours and pumped the fuel into tanks inside.
The truck was there from shortly after midnight on Saturday.
Checks showed 5,620 (1,236 gallons) of fuel had been taken.
Police want to hear from anybody in a vehicle that drove by while the theft was taking place, and any pedestrians who may have walked past.
Pc Ahren Perry, of Essex Police, said: "We also hope that drivers might remember seeing the van after it was loaded with fuel because 5,620 litres of diesel fuel would have been a heavy load for a Luton van and it would have been very low on its suspension."
Officers have warned other garages and service stations to check security.

been going on for over a year, they pull up on the tanker stand, break open the fill point ( it's just a padlock), shove a hose down the pipe and pump the fuel out with a small petrol pump

they've git half a dozen 1000l poly tanks of the sort used to deliver gas and hearing oil in the back of the van

specialist kit my arse!

they've even been known to hit a manned 24 hour site - we've had several alerts about it over the last few months

Now I did wonder what hearing oil might be - made me smile at the thought of "snake-oil salesmen types" peddling this miracle cure for developing symptoms of deafness!

Back to the OP, it never ceases to amaze me that these "less than honourable gentlemen" have the bare-faced cheek to do these things, often in the public view. Is it that "normal people" can't see what their brains tell them "couldn't happen"?

Blasted swype keyboard!

Bare faced cheek doesn't even begin to cover it - we had an earlier incarnation of the same sort of stunt when two blokes in a van with a 1000l tank in the back tried to fill it up and drive off on our HGV pumps. I rumbled them and they legged it but not before I got a very good look at one of them. Unbelievably, they rocked up 48 hours later and tried to do it again. Same forecourt, same team on duty, total brazen cheek, didn't seem to give a toss about being caught on CCTV or recognised.

Due in no small part <smug smug> to my prompt action they were caught at the next services along the A14 that very same night. Turns out they'd done over at least a dozen sites (which does beg th question of what the **** the staff were all playing at 'cos vans are not allowed on HGV pumps - the car forecourt has a 100l limit per transaction which is why they were trying to use the HGV pumps).

It went to court, I sat in the waiting room for four hours, they ddn't show up. Warrants issued for arrest, lady from the CPS said "to be honest, we expected this, they'll have left the country weeks ago"*

Explains why they didn't give a stuff about being ID'd, they knew full well that if arrested they'd be bailed and that they could simply fly out and escape the consequences. Can't help suspecting that they'd be back again within weeks with new passports in different names etc.

* I don't wish to promote the usual racist / xenophobic reaction from the far right types however there's no avoiding the truth which is that the two characters concerned were of Indian or Pakistani origin, I know not which, and it was hinted that they were overstayers on their visa and would have been deported after the court case anyway

Actually no. The roadside diesel thefts from HGVs yes, but the current spate of forecourt diesel thefts appears to be orchestrated by criminal elements in the Asian community (and that is only of relevance because it explains their cavalier attitude to the consequences of getting caught as per my previous)

5000 lt+ is about 5 tons, too much for one Luton van surely.

Glad I'm out of the game, I thought £30 was enough back in the 90s, this is totally unacceptable.

Mass immigration good for this country ? I don't think so !!!
