Ok - here\'s a question ...

List your dreams and reality destinations given present boat ....
We are talking when sitting in office / at work or just day-dreaming in cockpit tied up .....

a) What destination would you go for if time and tide were no trouble with present boat ...
b) What destination have you wished / planned for but still not managed with present boat ....
c) What boat and what destination with the boat you would hope to have .... ( we are not talking the impossible dream boat here !!)

For me :

a) UK South Coast round Britain, down through Canals to Meddy ... cruise to Greek Islands.
b) UK to Baltic
c) Moody 43 Eclipse .... French canals again... to Meddy ... round Meddy, then Canaries ... up West coast back to UK via C.I. etc.

Over to you lot ....

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

This dreams we must leave for winter. Now after this summer cruising we have to think about bills. Even that I shell give my dreams:
1. Croatian coast and Montenegro coast
2. Across Croatia and Italy to Malta then Cyprus and Turkie and back to Croatia via Cyclades and Corinth canal.
3. Hallberg Rassy little more than 42 feets.

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

a). round Britain
b). Ireland
c). Ovni Alubat 455 - North Atlantic, Faeroes, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, E Coast US then back across the Atlantic and up the W Coast of Europe.

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

From the office, at any time of the day or year, the south coast of England, specifically the Solent is my dream destination. Well, its a lot better than the office anyway. And if all goes well I'll be there tomorrow.

Places to visit on my list of "do-ables" in my boat are
1) Channel Islands. Everytime I tried in the past it was foggy, but now they've invented GPS I ought to manage. One day. More (b) than (a)

2) Isles of Scilly. Was there last year on a Big Boat, and it looked wonderful in the sunshine. It would take at least 3-4 weeks of leave to manage that one though. More (a) than (b).

That takes care of "a" and "b". "C" only applies if you include charter, as I'd rather chop off my right arm than sell my boat.
Current plans are a charter in the vicinity of Oban. I came through there on a sunny day (again on a big ship) and it was glorious. Past Tobermory and down through the sound of Jura to picturesque Glasgow. I'd love to spend a couple of weeks exploring (not Glasgow though).
No.2 is a week on Broads cruiser. Such beautiful boats, who cares about the scenery or the weather.

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

The current dream is buy a Fleming 55 (yes its a mobo but we're allowed to dream too) and do the following

Season 1 - south coast, westabout Ireland, west coast Scotland
Season 2 - cally canal, across North Sea, Baltic
Season 3 - south to med thru Dutch and French canals (although height of F55 a prob), south around Italy into Adriatic
Season 4 - Dalmation, Greek islands and Turkey and back to Gib
Season 5 - on a ship (it is a mobo) to the caribbean
Season 6 - die happy
Season 7 - wife sells boat, collects insurances and marries a toyboy

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

a) Not too ambitious with current boat... just local/near continent cruising...

b) Hope to take her across to Holland at some point....

c) Hoping to upgrade to a new 35-37 footer later next year, and then broaden horizons a little to perhaps CI, and west country (a little too far in current boat with any semblance of comfort)... work commitments won't allow any further distance...

We also have a d) plan...

All debts (mortgage etc) are clear by age 50 (careful planned!), and kids will have left home.... so we are going to sell our house, buy a smaller one, and then buy something circa 45 feet, and clear off for the foreseeable future.... We both are very keen to do the canals if possible, through Paris (might be an issue with a 45 ft'r).. and then cruise the med... maybe do the ARC, and then explore the Caribbean and Americas... and who knows where else....

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

Ovni alloy boat would be pretty good .
Still haven't been to Scillys ,Ireland,Baltic ,Cuba,South America (in no particular order). Probably best to buy another boat first tho.

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

a) round Ireland checking the guiness
b) Isle of Man (still not been there)
c) about 38-40ft, all over the north western end of the Med for four months every year until we know it backwards.

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

a) To amble as weather permits and do whole south coast uk and north coast France

b) Through the Raz and west coast France

c) HR/Najad 37 ish prob round Britain? Ireland Netherlands

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

Only bought the boat this year, and I sail single handed, but :
a) Falmouth and the Helford. Cos I've promised to sail my own boat where I really learnt about sailing.
b) Round Britain. Ellen MacAthur did it in a Coribbee which is smaller than mine. Not that I'm in the same league, but she was only 17
c) The Channel Isles to surprise some friends. And once there Brittany.

All in the same boat that I have now as I'm very happy with it.

Re: Thinks!

A. Shamrock Quay to Lodden in Norfolk and back. I better get on with that actually as the season is getting on.

B. I was aiming for the West Country this summer but family commitments got in the way.

C. Specific boat for me. I'd like "Maiden" and a refit. I'd cruise Holland Denmark Sweden and Norway. Over to Iceland back to Western Isles. If I can't have the old girl I'd settle for a Fisher 37 and do it slower.

I'd quite fancy your route without the canal bit.

Re: Ok - here\'s a question ...

Good question-

a) In reality, just spend as much time as possible exploring nothern Brittany. I love the place, the food, the people and the scenery.

b)Still want to get aound the corner to Western France.

c)J133 or big HR ( depending on how fast I want to sail) and cruise Scandinavia, around the top of Britain and possibly Iceland. Would also like to consider the OSTAR. Also dreaming of about 10 years time and getting a big HR and going off for a year with the family.
