Ok confession time I\'m rusty

Back to me book "A seamans guide to the rule of the road".

I can't remember all the shapes and lights and sounds so i'm going back to the start of the book.

How does anyone else remember them without using them all the time?

Ian

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

So maybe this should be the start of a thread on how to remember the things that should be remembered
Like
If two lights you see ahead port your helm/turn to starboard .. Show you red
or an Isolated danger mark is 2 white flashes F---k off , F---k off ..
and so on !!!
Cheers Bob E..

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

I'm hopeless at remembering them! At night I go by the maxim that says a) Lots of lights, probably commercial ship/ferry, so best to leave well alone unless its the shore, in which case apply same rule b) not a lot of lights, could be fishing, so leave well alone and c) if obviously sailboat, apply col regs. If I'm entering a bit of a tangle of boats, I get the book out. Shapes beffudle me, so book comes into play, to check.

Unless you really sail a lot in relatively unknown waters, it's not surprising that mental rust sets in and having the book handy is plain sensible IMHO, not a sign of dodgy seamanship.

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

Years ago I asked an instructor " I can't remember all those IRPCS regs - how do the professionals do it?"
" They spend 48 wks a year afloat, you only spend 4 or 5 - you can't expect to be able to.....but if you really want to learn them, get the 'Seamans guide' and read just one of the chapters, with the self test, every month to keep yourself topped up"

Excellent advice - I can't say I have done it every month but more or less...

I have sets of those cards [Flip Cards?] that you can buy at chandleries. You can get sets for lights, shapes, sound signals and ColRegs. I have a run through those at the start of the season [and before club quizzes].
Works for me.

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

Red over white - frying tonight. (Fishing boat)
White over red - skipper in bed. (Pilot on board)
Red over red - skipper dead. (Vessel not under command)

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

Fact is, any amount of Ginko Biloba wont help you remember all that information if you are not using it all the time, well not me anyway.

All lights etc are, I'm sure, in the front of your Reeds. I also have a little wire bound book, about DL size with all the major col regs and lights in it, most swindalries keep them, that always to hand.

If you want to borrow a set of flash cards for some revision, let me know, you can collect them from me Sat, I'll be at the boat.

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

thanks for that - i reckon i can remember the basisc, it's the "what is the sound signal for the last vessel in a tow" - restricted viz, type stuff that i've forgotten and it's frustrating.

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

You could get one of those 'slidy' chart thingies. You know plastic sleeve with inner push/pull plastic tab, holes in both sides, just slide inner tab until you see light combo you are seeking and Hey Presto, all is explained.
I do not know if they are any good, but have a similar thing to do with tides around IoW and that seems okay

Re: Ok confession time I\'m rusty

This is one of the reasons I havent done YM yet - I read the book and think Ive memorised it, then a week later look again and I havent.

And then I think, well it doesnt really matter about the difference in light characteristics between <50m and > 50m tow, I would just keep clear anyway. If the need arises, the book, almanac and flash cards are all in the chart table anyway.

One of these days - when I've got time and money to spare together - I want to give it a go and know I will just have to cram it and hope I remember everything on the day!

With a diamond between your balls you'd also be restricted in your ability to manouver.

Made me laugh. Never forgotton it.

Apart from during the several years they spend in full-time studying.
