Whats the difference between normal engine oil and engine oil specified for diesels. I couldnt get the proper stuff, and used a gallon of Dukchams instead. Engine is a BMC 1.5. Oil pressure is good when hot (45psi) and it is cooled through a couple of small heat exchangers

Mainly Diesel engine oil has more detergents in it. Duckhams should be fine for your engine.

the Deisel spec on the oil can 2 look for is
CC, CD CF, CG

C represents diesel spec oil & the higher the 2nd letter the better grade the oil
CC lowest ect.
some oil cans say "for petrol engines" bur will have a CF noted. this is still ok for diesels its just a "marketing ploy"

I'm not sure it's true to say the later the letter the "better" the oil. The later letters certainly indicate that the oil meets more modern specifications but that might not necessarily be better for your particular engine - especially if your engine is old. Stick with the manufacturer's recommendation if in doubt.

The detergent additive also acts as an anti acid agent, but if you change your marine diesel engine oil annually you are most unlikley to have any problems with acid number.
One wonders with road diesel fuel now being ultra low sulphur if the production of diesel and petrol oils is now necessary, but then if you can add 10p (approx) worth of additive and charge £2 more for the oil/ 5 ltr you would wouldn't you if the market doesn't question it.

CF grade 15W 40 from the local Lucas place is a bit over a fiver for five litres. Service staff admitted that they supply many marine engineers (who then charge the stuff out at £15 or so per 5l).

Works for me.
