Couple of years ago doing some maintenence work in the driveway, I knocked over a trigger spray of WD40 in the dark when getting off the boat and some leaked out onto the carpet. The carpet is similar to what you find in car boots.

We have tried Vanish, upholstry cleaner, 2001 carpet cleaner and various potions, but the stain lightens for a while, then comes back.

Anyone got any ideas, short of pulling up the carpet and gluing a new one down?

Ones eye is immediately drawn to the offensive patch, looks nearly black now on a grey carpet.

cheers

have you tried coating it in Swarfega rubbing it in and then cleaning off with soapy water?
