Would appreciate any advice from those with experience of this engine.

Have just put new big end bearings, rings etc, on starting found there was no oil pressure reading, took off oil filter - this was bone dry, ran engine again, engine made noise and stopped dead, however engine will still turn over, could this be a duff oil pump, also what else could have been damaged if this is the case

engine should have been assembled with a film of oil over all the moving parts which is supposed to be enough to avoid damage until full oil pressure is achieved. I dont know this particular engine, but filling the filter with oil is one way of reducing time taken to achieve adequate oil pressure and thus avoid that damage.

It may be that theoil pump is not priming itself to pick up the oil and pump it round the engine..a good tip is to fill the pump with vaseline before you fit it to the engine ..this will create enough suction to prime it , the vaseline will dissolve in the oil. Also a good idea as Talbot suggests to fill the filter with oil .More damage is done to engines on initial start up after a rebuild than any other time.hope you have not run it for too long.

Could be many things,
Was the oil pressure relief valve removed for the rebuild? was it refitted? is the pump the correct one? does it mesh correctly with the end of the cam shaft? did you prime the crank, filter and pump prior to assembly? Did you put enough oil in the sump to cover the pump inlet/sump strainer?. It is always prudent to crank a rebuilt engine over (minus injectors or plugs) to get the oil pressure up - should only take a few seconds. Then fit injectors (or spark plugs if petrol engine) and fire her up.

[/ QUOTE ]Sounds to me like you have, to use the technical expression, "bolloxed" something inside the engine. I suggest you strip her down again and find out what is damaged and if the pump is still in one piece.

It would be worth taking the rocker cover off and checking the oilways are clear with a length of welding rod or similar. Its not unknown for a new head gasket to have the oilway press-outs still in place stopping circulation.

Thanks to all for the helpful replies received so far, certainly gives me food for thought- in response to some of the comments:-

Oil Level: Sump is full, checked with dipstick and seems OK

Head Gasket: It seems that if oil holes blocked, this would affect oil to rocker assy only, shouldnt affect flow of oil
through rest of system

Does anyone have experience of oil pump filure, and do these occur often?

Bearings usually go first. I have never heard of a pump failing although I expect someone out there will come back saying they have actually experienced it.
I have had road vehicles with 250,000 miles (10,000 hours?) still on the original pumps (and bearings). From what you have intimated happened to your engine it is academic anyway - IMHO yours needs to come out, be stripped, faults rectified, new bearings at least and properly rebuilt
(and bench tested prior to installation if possible)
