About two years ago the guage started flickering wildly, changed the sender and all ok again. Has now started happening again, suspect it must be the sender again but would have expected more than 2 years from the new one. Is there anything I can/should do to repair the current one or is it simply order another and chuck the current one away again?

I may be way off track as I don't know which sender you have but I had a similar problem several years ago and traced it to the contacts on the sender being loose - the tangs were riveted onto copper pins in the top of the sender and had worked loose so rather than trying to rerivet the ends of the pins over and maybe pushing the pins through the bakelite top, I soldered the connections - (killed spirits as flux and high tin solder for those interested) I also added a couple of cable supports to help reduce the load on the connections. Gauge has worked fine ever since.
