hi.

olive oil keeps leaking out the bottom of where the tube is held onto the hull/bilge with filler. there is lots of filler around the tube and i dont want to have to remove it all. so is there something that can get rid of the oil and residue that is left to leave it clean enough that i can apply some sealant at the base of the tube to seal the bottom as the sealant wont bond to the oily surface of course

many thanks

ok, so you both are suggesting i clear the tube and filler and just use, say sikaflex? if so what is good for cleaning off the residue. would bilgex work.

also i also want to mount a garmin echo 151 fishfinder transducer in the hull too at the stern. as the transom mount isnt long enough for the sensor to be in the water. is this also possible with sealant as its a different type of transducer shape.

thanks

I am sure the old Lowrance fish finders we used in diving ribs came with a sachet of filler that you mixed up and bedded between the hull and the transducer. We have also used car body filler with good results.
Clean the area and sand off any lumps then wipe over with acetone or thinners before bonding.

if you want to remove all traces of oil, then a biological cleaner embedded in a detergent is best. Nearest supermarket will have some if you go through all the small print on the back of the packages. Look for the word 'enzymes'.

Acetone is the best cleaner but will also remove any Danboline or other bilge paint. Meths, turps or any heavy duty cleaner will work. As others have said, standard bathroom silicone is fine for the job, not Sikaflex.

I know nowt about fish finders so don't want to comment on how that transducer should be mounted.

Yes, providing your hull is solid GRP. You are likely not to be able to run the sounder and fishfinder at the same time, though, as one will interfere with the other.

thanks all. i ordered acetone and will this week try to remove the pipe and all the filler and oil residue and fit the nasa transducer direct to the hull with bathroom sealant. For the fish finder its more of a backup to me and will use when i anchor. ill mount that like the bow transducer to the stern near where my watertank is. hoping the batteries either side wont interfere. and yes my boat is solid GRP.
