At the back end of last season I recounted a tale of woe about the lamp glass for our oil lamp breaking. I received much good advice from the users of this forum and purchased a replacement from Nauticalia.

When we were up at the boat recently we found that it is marginally too wide at the bottom and won't fit into the lamp base.

The part we need is 2 inches wide at the base - it is an old boat - but the part we bought, which looks tickety boo, is about a millimetre wider than that. We have tried prising the lugs out but to no avail without actually breaking them.

Does anyone know where we might get a 2 inch wide / 6 inch tall lamp chimney? We have hunted around the web but have yet to find exactly what we need.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dougie,

Unfortunately I cannot help with a source but it seems that your lamp/chimney may be the consequece of an imperial/metric combination.

However you say you need a 2" chimney (which is 51mm). So it would be too large for a 50mm lamp. As it is a lamp in an old boat, I'm inclined to think the lamp is 2" (51mm) so if the chimney is 1mm too large that would mean you need a 52mm chimney which is an "odd" size.

It seems more likely that the lamp is 50mm and the chimney purchased is 2" (51mm) which would be 1mm too large.

I had the same problem at Nauticalia... Apparently a couple of years ago the shop changed the supplier of spare chimneys for their ever popular oil lamp. However the spare is 54 mm when It should be 52mm even though their web page says it’s a direct replacement, so now the Nauticalia spare does not fit their own lamp I believe they are fully aware of this if you go to one of their shops just ask if you can change the ill fitting one for the display model then you will get the right size. That’s how I fixed my issue. Might be worth a natter with head office.

I have remeasured both the old one and the new and it appears that the old one is 52mm and the new one is 54mm.. I will contact Moncrieff by phone and ask for their advice.

Thanks again to you all for your help.

The next time you are in Tobermory pop into the nice General Store /Ironmongery . They had several sizes available the last time I was there and I got a replacement for a Fasnet lamp.
