Oil in Exhaust Water & Black Smoke......Anyone?

I have an old Lister stw3 engine and has been running fine until yesterday when she started to splutter and noticed that there was what seemed to be oil in the exhaust and black smoke coming from it.

My first thought was that it could possibly be the oil cooler but have read a few posts which indicate it could be the injectors, but i thought maybe the smoke wouldnt be black if this was the case?

Any advice appriciated

Hi sorry not able to offer positive advice BUT i know a man who can, i get all my spares & advice from him: Peter @ 01895236246 (marine engine services middlesex) talk to him he is very helpfull what he dont know aint worth knowing, you will get a definate answer. good luck
 
Black smoke - Is an indication of unburned fuel or the engine is highly loaded. If the boat is moving at hull speed and the engine has enough power to try to make it go faster, black smoke will result. Back off the throttle a few hundred RPM's until the black smoke disappears or reduces to grey smoke.

Black smoke with an oil sheen and soot on the water may indicate plugged, worn or dirty injectors. Running the engine hard for 15 minutes or so may clean up the exhaust. If after this "blowing out" period the black smoke continues, service of the injectors may be necessary.

Grey smoke - Is an indication that the engine is running well. All diesel engines produce some grey smoke and may deposit a sooty film on the transom of the boat. If a lot of soot is present, see "black smoke".

White smoke - Normally indicates steam. Check the engine temperature and the volume of exhaust water to insure the engine is running at the proper temperature. In colder weather, white smoke is normal when the engine is running at operating temp.
 
Make sure that the oil level is normal incase there is fuel in the oil.

I have had this due to the engine running to hot. The air going into the engine was probably to thin.
