Whilst briefly ashore in Spain I bought some Repsol oil for a Volvo 2003 engine. I read the labels and bought a mineral oil that seemed to match my engine (with detergent, suitable for tractors!).

However, when at sea I checked the spec against the Volvo manual and discovered that the oil I bought is SAE 40 whereas the manual recommends SAE 30. The engine will be used in hot places for the foreseeable future.

Is there a problem in using this oil? Not practicable to take it back…...

Thanks

SAE 40 is simply slightly thicker, s less suited for colder weather, which it sounds like you won't be experieicning. I would use it, then change to something thinner if you sail into cooler water (below ~10oC).

The owners manual available on-line via the VP website specifies a 15W/40 oil. Which surprise, surprise is the viscosity grade of VP Diesel Engine oil

40 is the viscosity grade when hot so on that basis I'd happily use a straight grade 40 oil
15W refers to its pumpability at very low temperatures so not really relevant.
